The input power is 24V. Why do you need to step down the power supply by 18V before entering the buck chip? When entering the power chip to step down to 5V, it seems that several schematic diagrams are designed in this way. Power chip buck?

Direct transfer, the efficiency will be low, the temperature will rise, and the heat dissipation is not good. A level is added in the middle to ensure the efficiency and the temperature rise meets the requirements.

24V directly changes to 5V differential pressure, too large, will cause heat, so the middle first becomes 18V.
